Hike in Van Cortlandt Park (1/18/14)

Saturday, January 18th, we got in touch with nature in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Even when faced with rain, snow, and cold weather, nothing can stop the YouthCaNers! We walked on the Cass Gallagher trail.

This used to be part of the Bronx River, but it was turned into a dam. This made this river slower and wider.

Jay caught some plankton in the freezing waters of the pond, using his homemade filter. While the water passes through the filter, the little critters get caught in the container at the bottom.

The Vault Hill is where the Van Cortlandt family is buried. More information can be found here: http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/X092/highlights/8774

We saw some geese. These aren’t Canadian geese, they’re Canada geese. Legend says they are named after John Canada.

After venturing all the way into Yonkers, the hike ended. We had a lot of fun and would definitely do it again!
